KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE| SKINCARE 101




Lately there is a huge rise in the number of image conscious women who want to look good at all times, relying heavily on makeup and filters rather then fixing the canvas (i.e the skin) all thanks to Instagram/ snap-chat were you can easily edit your images and look no less then a celebrity.
In the midst of all this social media craze women generally ignore the importance of skincare,miss diagnosing their skin type and using the wrong products . So lets help you understand your skin better.
So skin is broadly divided into four type:
  • Normal Skin
  • Dry Skin
  • Oily Skin
  • Combination Skin
Anything other then these four are Skin conditions like :
  • Acne-prone Skin
  • Sensitive Skin
  • Aging Skin
  • Dehydrated Skin
  • Hyper pigmentation
Now lets look at the Skin types in a little more details :
  • Normal Skin : This is an ideal skin type as it needs least amount of maintenance and still looks good. The surface of the skin is smooth and has minimum to no visible pores.
  • Dry Skin : If your skin always feels tight and you can never get enough of moisturizer, you have Dry Skin. Your skin does not secrete enough sebum(oils) which leads to flaking and early signs of fine lines and aging.
There is a subtle difference between dry and dehydrated skin. While Dry Skin is a Skin type Dehydrated Skin is a temporary Skin condition which might happen due to climate change, change in medication or less intake of water.
  • Oily Skin : If your skin is shiny and moist and you find yourself blotting or washing your face almost all the time to get rid of the shine then you have oily skin. Your skin produces way too much sebum(oils). On the brighter side oily skin are less prone to getting fine lines and skin sagging due to the excess oil.
  • Combination Skin : If you have both dry and oily areas on your face you have combination skin. The cheeks are usually dry and the forehead, nose and chin oily.
How to know your Skin Type :
Step 1:
  • Do not apply any moisturizer or night cream before going to bed.
  • The next morning check your skin closely in a mirror.
  • If your skin feels neither dry nor oily and is soft to touch, you have normal skin.
  • If your skin feels tight and you feel the need to moisturize it, you have dry skin
  • If you can see oil on your cheeks, forehead,nose and your face looks overall shiny you have oily skin.
  • If your cheeks feel dry but, your t-zone is relatively oily then you have combination skin.
Step 2:
  • Now wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry.
  • Do not apply any product on your face.
  • Wait for an hour or two without applying any product, if your skin still feels soft and supple, you are one lucky women. Your skin is Normal
  • Rest of the signs are same as step 1.
All this been said, knowing your skin type can be quite tricky, being self aware is the best way to go about it. Someone with normal Skin might get oily due the extreme heat of summer months forcing them to think they have oily skin which wont be true.
The best time to test your skin type is when it is clean of any dirt or makeup and the temperature is comfortable.
Once you truly know your skin type it is much more easy to take care of it. The market today is flooded with products labelled according to different skin types.
